Guardians, Conservators, Powers of Attorney, and Advanced Directives: A Guide for Families and Long Term Care Providers in Oregon

In this free sixteen page booklet I explain the basic legal documents and court procedures used when an elder faces disability due to deterioration in mental capacity. I discuss both the advantages and disadvantages of powers of attorney. I explain advanced directives, and I set out the standards for establishing a guardianship or conservatorship. It is designed for families, care providers, and anyone else interested in the legal issues surrounding loss of mental capacity due to aging.

My Practice

I am a sole practitioner who works primarily in the area of elder law, estate planning, and probate. My goal is to provide solutions to elders and their families facing the legal challenges associated with aging.

I work out of small office in Fairview on Halsey. I had always dreamed of having my own modest practice where I could give my clients personal attention and work in the areas of law that interest me. In pursuit of that goal, did post-law school studies in the Portland State University gerontology program. In 2003, I opened the practice.

I meet with my clients personally to tackle estate planning problems, Medicaid eligibility issues, and the many legal uncertainties that accompany aging. I help families with guardianships, conservatorships, long term care problems, and protection of family assets. When death occurs I can provide sympathetic and economical guidance through the probate process.

I am comfortable meeting clients and their families at my office, in their homes, or at long term care facilities. Being from a family of modest means myself, I have designed a practice that allows me to use computers to reduce legal fees. I can do many tasks for a flat fee, and even when I can't, my fees are designed to make legal representation available to people of moderate income.
